Thatcham S5 trackers
£549
Vehicle security
The S5 Plus is a Thatcham-certified Category S5 tracker with everything the standard S5 gives you, and it adds immobilisation on top of it. Check your policy for the category yours asks for — this meets S5 and does more besides.
Price £800
It is the top of the range we fit on a single vehicle, and it is two jobs in one install. The tracking half is a Thatcham-certified Category S5 system: a concealed unit reporting to a monitoring centre around the clock, with driver recognition tags so the car knows whether an authorised driver is aboard. If it moves without a tag, the monitoring centre treats that as a theft in progress and calls you.
The second half is immobilisation. No Fob No Start is included as standard, so the car will not be driven away unless your authorised tag is present — and starter-kill immobilisation means the monitoring centre can prevent a stolen vehicle being restarted once it has been stopped.
Thatcham certifies the equipment rather than the people who fit it, and Category S5 is what insurers most often name on higher-value cars. Anything sold as a tracker without that certification is a different product answering a different question.
Higher-value and higher-risk vehicles, and cars where an insurer or a finance company has named Category S5 in writing. If you have a letter or a policy document naming a category, bring it — it tells us in one line which product you actually need.
It also suits anyone who was going to fit a tracker and an immobiliser separately. Buying the two jobs as one install is why this page exists: the same visit, the same loom, one system that does both.
If your policy only asks for a tracker without naming a category, an S7 usually satisfies it and costs less. We would rather tell you that before you buy than after.
The tracking unit goes in concealed and wired into the vehicle's own loom, and the immobilisation is wired in alongside it on the same visit. Where any of it goes is deliberately not something we publish.
Your tags are paired and then tested on your own car — the car recognising an authorised driver, and the immobilisation refusing to let it move without one. We test the tracking with the monitoring centre before you leave, so you know the system reports properly on your vehicle rather than just that a box has been fitted somewhere.
The work is done by an IMI-approved technician trained by The OBD Company, on dealer-level tools rather than a generic cable.
Your certificate is emailed to you by the monitoring platform once the system is fitted and tested. Your insurer wants that document, and the platform issues it rather than us, so it arrives by email rather than over the counter.
We are authorised installers for Scorpion Automotive and for Gecko Telematics, and both build to the Thatcham categories insurers ask for by name. Which system goes in depends on your car and on what your policy asks for, and we will tell you which we are proposing before you commit.
Fitting happens at our own unit at 85 Bogmoor Road in Glasgow, directly across from the Shieldhall test centre. This is the most involved security install we do — two systems, one loom — and it is workshop work rather than something to attempt at a kerbside.
The monitoring subscription has to stay live for the cover to mean anything. The first year is in the price and it renews annually after that. We say so up front, because a lapsed subscription is a tracker that has stopped being a tracker, and insurers do check.
£800 fitted, including the first year's monitoring.
Insurance-approved trackers take starter-kill immobilisation, which prevents a stopped vehicle being restarted. Instant engine kill, which stops a running engine from the app, is a different feature and is available on the standard GPS tracker packages instead — ask if that is what you had in mind.
What moves the price is the vehicle rather than the day. Some cars take longer to get into properly and a few need a different unit entirely. If yours is one of them we will say so when you send the registration.
The tracking is the same Thatcham Category S5 system with the same driver tags and the same monitoring. The S5 Plus adds immobilisation: No Fob No Start as standard, and starter-kill through the monitoring centre. If you only need to satisfy an S5 requirement, the standard S5 does that.
It is certified to Category S5, which is what insurers name most often on higher-value cars — but check your policy, because the requirement is set per insurer. Send us what your insurer wrote and we will tell you whether this covers it.
It prevents a stolen vehicle being restarted once it has already been stopped. It does not cut a running engine — that is instant engine kill, a different feature on a different package. We are specific about this because the two get conflated and they behave differently at the worst possible moment.
Yes. Monitoring is a subscription and it has to stay live for your insurance requirement to keep being met. The first year is in the price and it renews annually after that.
Come to us and we will pair a replacement. Carry a spare if you can — we will set one up at fitting if you ask.
Usually yes. It is a fit and a re-registration with the monitoring platform rather than a new system, so it costs less than starting again. Ask when you change the car.
